Prowly Pricing Guide 2024: Costs & Plans Broken Down

In this guide, we’ll walk you through each subscription tier for Prowly so you can find the best option for your needs.

Investing in a modern PR software platform is worthwhile for any public relations teams or pros that want to improve and scale their media coverage. That said, understanding the pricing behind PR platforms (like Prowly) can be a confusing process if you don’t familiarize yourself with it.

That's why we've created this in-depth guide on Prowly's pricing. It contains everything you'll need to know about their subscription plans (plus the one that's best for you).

Ready? Let's get into it!

TL;DR

  • Prowly is a PR software platform with contact management, email pitching, newsroom creation, media monitoring, and reporting capabilities
  • Prowly is focused around helping you reach a mass quantity of inbox (instead of focusing on relationship-building and creating fans)
  • Prowly offers a 7-day free trial of their Basic plan
  • Prowly’s paid plans range from $258/month to $589/month depending on which tier you choose and if you sign up with an annual or monthly commitment
  • Prowly’s pricing compared to tools like Prezly (which starts at $90/month) is fairly expensive
  • Prowly’s expensive pricing, outdated media database, limited email sending, and rigid cancellation policy all hinder its usefulness as a PR platform
  • Online reviews show multiple Prowly customers criticizing the pricing
  • If you need a modern PR software platform for earning media coverage, then a tool like Prezly would be a better alternative to Prowly
  • If you need a low-cost Prowly alternative just for helping you find and pitch to journalists, check out Connectively

What is Prowly?

Prowly is a software platform to manage all of your PR work and campaigns from one place. Their suite is designed to help you publish press releases online, find and pitch media contacts, and monitor your media mentions.

Prowly also includes a reporting tool to help you track and share the results of your campaigns.

Is Prowly free or paid?

Prowly doesn’t currently offer a free plan, but they do have a 7-day free trial anyone can try out. With this trial, you’ll get access to all the features in their basic plan. You’ll also get limited access to their reporting tools (which are only included in their advanced plan).

You do not need a credit card to start your free trial.

What is Prowly’s pricing?

Prowly’s pricing is easiest understood when grouped into four plans (Basic, Pro, Pro Annual, and Enterprise). Each plan gives you varied access to the tools and services in their suite.

These specific tools and services include: Contact Management, Email Pitches and Press Releases, Media Monitoring, Reporting, Online Newsroom, and User Support.

Rather than reciting every item in Prowly’s plans in this article, we’ve simplified the main idea of all three to help you understand which is best for you.

Note: Prowly offers their pricing in four currencies (USD, EUR, PLN, and GBP), though for simplicity, we’ll only be discussing prices in USD.

Prowly Basic

  • Cost: $369/mo billed monthly, or $258/mo billed annually.
  • Feature access:
    • Contact Management: Can store 500 contacts
    • Email Pitches: Can send 1,000 emails (without automated follow-up)
    • Media Monitoring: Can monitor 10,000 online mentions (but not social media mentions)
    • Online Newsroom: Limited to 1
    • Reporting: Not possible on the Basic plan
    • Users: Can have 2 users
  • Who it’s for: Prowly Basic is mostly made for individual PR professionals, not teams. That’s why you’ll see team-oriented features (like reporting and new user onboarding) missing. So, if you’re solo, Prowly Basic is your best fit. You’ll miss out on a couple nice features like being able to send automated follow-up emails and monitor your social mentions. But, given that it has everything else you’ll need (and at a much lower price), Basic makes more sense for individual PR experts. Coming from a team? Look towards Prowly Pro and up.

Prowly Pro

  • Cost: $589/mo billed monthly
  • Feature access:
    • Contact Management: Can store 1,500 contacts
    • Email Pitches: Can send 3,000 emails (with automated follow-ups)
    • Media Monitoring: Can monitor 50,000 online mentions (+ social media mentions)
    • Online Newsroom: Limited to 1
    • Reporting: Can create reports for up to 5 brands
    • Users: Can have 2 users
  • Who it’s for: Prowly Pro is made for agencies and in-house teams with multiple projects to manage. It includes more resources than Prowly Basic (high contact limit, more email sends, etc.) and access to all of their team-oriented features. So, if you’re part of a team or agency, Prowly Pro or Prowly Pro Annual are both your best choices. Read on for our Prowly Pro Annual breakdown to understand exactly which of the two we think you should pick.

Prowly Pro Annual

  • Cost: $416/mo billed annually
  • Feature access:
    • Contact Management: Can store 2,000 contacts
    • Email Pitches: Can send 5,000 emails (with automated follow-ups)
    • Media Monitoring: Can monitor 80,000 online mentions (+ social media mentions)
    • Online Newsroom: Limited to 3
    • Reporting: Can create reports for up to 10 brands
    • Users: Can have 3 users
  • Who it’s for: Just like Prowly Pro, Prowly Pro Annual is made for agencies and in-house teams with multiple projects to manage. The main difference with Prowly Pro annual is that it includes more resources than Prowly Pro (at a lower cost). Clearly, Prowly’s goal with these differences is to incentivize new customers to lock themselves into an annual commitment (rather than monthly).
  • Still not sure if you should go with Pro or Pro Annual? Before picking your plan, we’d suggest doing one, or both, of the following:
    • Forecast: Try to see how many resources from Prowly you’ll need per month (email sends, saved contacts, etc.). If the number clearly surpasses what you’re capable of doing with Pro, consider going with Pro Annual.
    • Try before committing: Sign up for Prowly Pro for a few months. Then, if you like it enough to commit, move over to Prowly Pro Annual.

Prowly Enterprise

  • Cost: No details
  • Feature access: No details
  • Who it’s for: Within Prowly’s platform (but not on their website’s pricing page), they mention the ability to create a custom enterprise plan for larger teams who need more resources. Though, since this package is more bespoke, no pricing details are given. If you’re from a larger company, and see your team needing more resources than what Prowly Pro Annual can offer, we suggest booking a call with Prowly’s sales team. From there, you can learn more about what an enterprise plan with them could look like.

What are the downsides of Prowly?

There are a few drawbacks that you should be aware of before committing to a Prowly subscription:

  • Expensive pricing: While less expensive than more traditional PR platforms like Cision or Meltwater, Prowly is still quite pricey, even on their cheapest plan. Annually, you could pay anywhere from $3,096-$7,068 just to access the platform
  • Outdated media database: Like most others with media databases, Prowly’s is known for not always being accurate or up-to-date. Aside from feeling like wasted money, this has also led to email deliverability issues, with some users having their email accounts flagged for spam. (Note: at Prezly, we are actively and ethically against the use of media databases altogether. Instead, we focus on helping our customers build authentic media relationships and earn real coverage)
  • Hard to cancel: Potentially the biggest customer complaint about Prowly is that it’s incredibly hard to cancel with them. And, once you’ve finally canceled, getting any kind of refund is even harder
“The consultant simply told me they wouldn't return my money, even though I have gotten absolutely no value from the software and was charged over $300 for something I won't use.” Source: Capterra.

One last thing to consider is how restricted Prowly’s email sending is — limiting sends to 1,000 emails on their basic plan. This stands in stark contrast to something like Prezly where we allow our customers on any plans to send an unlimited number of emails per month.

What do users say about Prowly’s pricing?

Prowly’s customers have mixed feelings when it comes to their pricing. On Capterra, Prowly scores a 3.7/5 in “Value for Money.”

Dissatisfied users are generally unhappy with Prowly’s refund policy, plan limitations, or media database quality.

“There are many limitations even on the paid plan. You can find much better services, with less limitations for a fraction of the price.” Source: Capterra.

Are there better PR tools than Prowly?

With so many tools available for managing your PR workflow and earning more media coverage, there’s no reason to believe that Prowly is the best choice for every team or individual. This is especially true given how expensive Prowly can be compared to other tools.

Let’s take a look at two Prowly alternatives: Prezly and Connectively.

Prezly – The original Prowly alternative

As the original modern PR platform, entering the space even before Prowly, Prezly is the most robust option for PR teams.

In addition to giving you all the tools you need to earn high-quality media coverage, we offer more advanced features focused around building authentic media relationships. All at a lower cost.

Let’s quickly go over some of the features that Prezly has to offer:

  • PR CRM: Store, manage, and grow your media relationships all from one place. Track exactly how the media engages with your press and outreach. Juggling multiple spreadsheets filled with contacts? Import any list into our PR CRM and immediately have all of your contacts securely organized

The fact that all of these features — with the exception of storing coverage — are available in Prezly’s entry-level Starter plan ($90/month) makes it an overall better value for money than Prowly.

  • Write & publish brand stories in an online newsroom

  • Send email campaigns, pitches & newsletters

  • Manage all your contact lists in a single CRM, with easy import & export

  • Measure performance with analytics & built-in media monitoring

Connectively – Prowly alternative

If you’re just looking for a tool to find and pitch media contacts, but with lower pricing than Prowly, you should consider Connectively

Connectively (formerly Help A Reporter Out) is a platform that connects you with media contacts (journalists, influencers, etc.) looking for stories to cover.

Their free plan lets you send up to 10 pitches per month, so there’s little risk in trying it out before spending a large amount on a media database like Prowly’s.

Conclusion

As you can see, Prowly is more than capable of helping you manage and improve your PR efforts. That said, their expensive pricing, coupled with a lack of focus on relationship building, severely limits its usefulness for earning media coverage.

If you’d rather build relationships and earn media coverage at a much lower cost, start your 14-day free trial of Prezly today!
